Many teachers want to combine their teaching career with other priorities such as family commitments or part time study. Part time work provides this opportunity and it can also be an attractive alternative to an unwanted carer break. Part time work can be particularly appealing to many people especially, women teachers returning to work after maternity leave, teachers with disabilities or medical conditons who can not cope with the work load of full time employement or mature teachers who after some years away from the profession want to get back into it but not on a full time basis.
Part time teaching is also a benefit for employers with recruitment and retention as well as showing their commitment to equal opportunities. It can encourage more women teachers to remain in teaching after maternity leave and it can also reduce turnover in staff by offering more convenient hours of work. It has also been demonstrated by OFSTED research that the quality of work by part time teachers is “significantly above the national average”, so benefiting the pupils as well. So part time teaching can be a beneift all round.
