How your appearance can help make a good first impression at interview

Nicky Hambleton-JonesFirst impressions in an interview count. The interviewer’s opinion is based not just on what you say, but also how you look, act and sound. It’s important to dress smartly and appropriately to make sure you make the right impression.

Top stylist Nicky Hambleton-Jones gives her top style tips to help you make a good first impression.
Dress appropriately

Nicky says, “Different work places have different dress codes. Going for a job in a high-powered bank and turning up in an informal outfit is not a good idea”.

“However, if you were going for a job in advertising, you can show a little personality with a more relaxed and quirky outfit teamed with a great pair of shoes and a tailored jacket.”
Affordable fashion

“Repair and re-wear!”

“Shopping for a new work wardrobe can be done on a tight budget, with an increasing number of supermarkets and budget clothing retailers offering tailored suits and smart tops at prices that won’t break the bank”, Nicky advises.

“If you don’t want to buy new items, then repair and re-wear - spruce up your scuffed shoes with a new shoe polish and get your suit dry-cleaned.”
Be smart

“Dress codes in companies do vary, but when it comes to interviews, it’s always better to dress on the smart side rather than under-dress”, Nicky says.

“If you dress too informally you will look sloppy and the interviewer may think you are not taking the role seriously.”
Be memorable

Do something that makes you different, Nicky advises.

“You don’t want to be so memorable that it puts the interviewer off you”

“If you can wear something with a little ‘stand-out’ - be it a bold colour (in moderation), a striking pair of glasses, a great pair of shoes – it will help jog the interviewer’s memory of you when reviewing the list“

“Be cautious; you don’t want to be so memorable that it puts the interviewer off you.”
Avoid head-to-toe black

“It’s easy to look professional and sharp in black, navy or charcoal tones,” says Nicky, “but do mix in some white or colour to break the darkness up and make you appear more approachable without detracting from your talent.”
Wear natural fabric

Finally, “interviews can be nerve-wracking enough without worrying about sweat patches on show,” says Nicky,

“Choose natural fabrics to keep you looking cool, calm and collected no matter how tense you feel. It’s also good to wear a fabric that doesn’t crease easily as you may be waiting for a while before your interview begins.”
