If you read online forums, magazines or websites aimed at helping line managers, you get an interesting insight into the mindset of an interviewer. An increasingly common headline confidently suggests employers ‘should hire the attitude and train the skill’.
This is why your behaviours, attitudes or personal traits, are so important at interview. Skills can be taught, but an employer can’t make you get out of bed each morning. With teamwork being so important in today’s organisations, having the skills or experience to match is not enough.
A person’s value to an organisation is not just the value from their own work, but also the value they bring to others. Good attitude is the glue that sticks a team together.
Before attending an interview, learn to manage your attitude. This means your enthusiasm, motivation, positivity, integrity and a genuine interest in the company you are applying to. Even simple things like manners – thank the interviewer before and after the meeting – can make an impression.
An interviewer will look to assess your experiences, skills and behaviours. You probably have the interview on the basis of the interviewer being attracted to the skills and experience outlined in your CV. Hence the focal point on attitude at interview.
