The development of Eldon Square will create over 480,800 sq. ft of new retail space ( a net increase of 325,000 sq. ft.) This will be done in three schemes, the new bus station and mall, the regeneration of Old Eldon Square and the Southern Gateway. The 425,000 sq. ft Southern Gateway scheme alone will provide a major new department store and around 30 new large stores.
The total devlopment cost will be around £150 million with phased completions between now and 2009. This development will create many temp and part time jobs not only in retail once completed but also during construction. It is estimated that it will create 1,000 jobs on completion and 2,000 during construction.
Already Eldon Square West has been completed with the opening of new larger format stores for retailers such as Carphone Warehouse and Holland & Barrett. In addition new restaurants have opened including Strada and Wagamama. This whole development will create numerous part time and temp jobs in area.
