Retail jobs created in Cardiff

Thousands of retail jobs will be created next year when the shopping centre project St David’s 2 opens in Cardiff. About 4,000 jobs both part-time and full-time will be avaliable.

The centre will have numerous shops, restaurants, cafes and bars as well as a library. It will also be home to Wale’s first John Lewis department store.

The developers of the scheme are working with the council to arrange free courses to provide training.

Jobs created in Cardiff

The plans have been submitted to Cardiff council for the redevlopment of the supermarket on the existing St Mellons site. This would create 300 new jobs when it becomes a Tesco Extra. The expansion of the store will increase the staff from 200 to 500.

AA creates jobs in Cardiff

The AA has announced plans to move its entire driving school operation from its Bristol office to its flagship building in Cardiff where it already employes over 500 people in its insurance call centre.

This move is due to take place in June and will create more than 100 jobs at the AA centre of excellence in Cardiff. The AA has confirmed that its 2,000 qualified instructors will be unaffected by the move.

St David’s Shopping Centre Development

St David’s shopping centre in Cardiff will undergo a modernisation and refurbishment which will include the building of St David’s 2 creating a stunning new retail destination covering around 1.4 million square feet, one of the largest in the UK.

This will provide John Lewis with its first presence in Wales, with a 260,000 square foot department store anchoring the Southern end of the new development. There will also be over 128 major stores in the development.

This development will create many new full-time, part-time and temporary jobs in the area. In 2009 over over 120 employers will be actively looking for in excess of 4000 employees to work in the St David’s Shopping Centre. As part of the recruitment drive for construction and retail positions which will commence in 2007 the partnership and Bovis Lend Lease will put in place the following initiatives:

1. A dedicated on site Job Shop
2. A travelling bus which will visit surrounding communities to highligh job oppertunities
3. Skills Training
4. Assistance in finding the correct prefessional qualifications
5. A skills matching database which employers can use to match job criteria

The search for 1000 construction positions has begun and a project dedicated job shop has been opened and is located at the main site on Barrack Lane. Along with helping people find work on the site, it will also provide information and advice on gaining construction skills training and how to obtain a CSCS card.
