Jobs created in West Midlands

The development of The Essington Golf Club in the West Midlands is set to create up to 50 jobs. The new club has been planned by Woodfarm Golf & Leisure and is to be built on 80 acres of land at a cost of £2 million.

It is hoped that the course and the clubhouse will open in 2010 and create opportunities for groundsmen and managers.

Investment in Jaguar Land Rover to create jobs

Car company Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is to create up to 600 jobs under a £700m investment plan. This expansion comes not long after the company was bought by Tata Motors from Ford for £1.7bn.

The recruitment drive aims to attract engineers to work on new technology and product devlopment programmes, althoguht there will also be jobs in purchasing, finance and human resources. Also a new programme for more than 80 graduates to join the business in Spetember is being launched.

Most of the jobs will be at the firm’s devlopment centre in Gaydon, Warwickshire. JLR currently employs some 16,000 people at plants in Solihull and Liverpool, as well as the devlopment centres at Gaydon and Coventry.

IT jobs to be created

IT and technology company Wipro is set to create hundreds of new jobs when it opens a new facility near London. It is planning a new software development facility in the south-east, probably outside London.

Wipro plans to increase the number of jobs at its Reading base by 200 to reach full capacity. It will then look to open another delivery centre in the UK, at a location yet to be decided but current considerations include Birmingham, Warwick and Edinburgh. It is thought the office will be opened in the next two years.

European investment in West Midlands

The European Commission has given the go ahead for a £270 million investment programme in Worcestershire and across the region as part of a five-year programme to boost new business in the area. It is expected that the investment will help the region create more than 10,000 new jobs and support 22,000 businesses.

The investment programme, facilitated by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), will focus on reducing unemployment and increasing the productivity of the West Midlands’ business base while ensuring sustainable economic growth.

Brierley Hill Shopping Centre in the Black Country

The Black Country has received a £1bn investment as an integrated shopping centre is being created from The Waterfront Business Park, the High Street and Merry Hill. This regeneration of the area will create thousands of full time and part time jobs initially within construction and then within retail and all the support services in the area.
