NHS installs new employment checks….

The NHS will introduce tough new employment checks for all staff from 1st April 2008.

Some six booklets will contain all the information you need to know in regard to what standards employers must meet to comply to both legislation and NHS policy. The six areas of pre-employment checking include verification of identity, right to work, registration and qualification, employment history and references, criminal records checks and occupational health checks.

It is estimated that respective HR depatments will find these new checks particularly tough (particularly on their time!) when it comes to the vast number of temporary staff and students that the NHS employs annually.

Nurses out of work

It has been revealed today that a record number of nurses and midwives cannot find jobs after graduating. There has been an 80% rise over the last three years in nursing professionals unemployed six months after qualifying. Current figures show more than 1,000 nurses are jobless.

Winter bugs lead to increased temp requirements…

The vicious onset on the Norovirus this winter has reached record proportions with the worse cases being seen since 2002. The government and related health advisers are warning people to stay at home for at least 48 hours after you believe that you are better and this extended the amount of time that vast numbers of staff are being kept away from work. The numbers of people calling in sick has therefore led to increased numbers of temporary workers being needed in the workplace.
