Temporary jobs have been created for 237 young people and the long-term unemployed in Cambridgeshire after £1.5m of Government funding.
The money has been given to Cambridgeshire Together, a group of the county’s public and voluntary organisations and the temporary jobs will become available in February in tourism and leisure, community development and health and administration.
Healthcare recruiter HCL has recently claimed that “the NHS will need to significantly increase its use of flexible staffing if a public sector spending cut leads to a significant reduction in headcount among permanent frontline staff”. This will provide much needed temporary jobs in the healthcare, medical and socialcare sectors.
Employment in the public sector rose by 13,000 from April 2009 to 6.039m, claims Office for National Statistics.
Employment in central government increased by 21,000, due mainly to growth in employment in the NHS. The NHS grew a staggering 18,000.
Civil service workers also increased by 1,000.
Placements in public sector interim management have overtaken the demand in the private sector for the first time since 2006.
The Interim Management Association’s (IMA) Ipsos MORI report, showed that 51% of all completed interim assignments in quarter two were from the public sector. An increase of 43% from quater one.
Local government (30%), Healthcare (25%) and Non-departmental government bodies (10%) were key areas of the public sector pushing demand up for interim / temporary managers.
Researchers at Leeds, Nottingham, Birmingham and West of Scotland universities recently produced a report concluding that temporary staff are costlier than full time employees even though temp staff are unavoidable in maintaining services.
