HS2, good….ish news

The country welcomed the government’s decision to press ahead with HS2, the high speed rail project, TUC Deputy General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:
‘The government’s welcome decision to invest in high speed rail will prove vital in getting more passengers and freight onto rail, narrowing the north south divide and speeding our economic recovery.’

‘But thousands of jobs in rail construction, renewals and maintenance are currently under threat from Sir Roy McNulty’s proposals to cut staffing across the rail industry. If ministers are serious about delivering the rail infrastructure of the future, they must defend the jobs of these skilled and experienced workers who will be essential if HS2 is to become a reality.
‘With government and cross party support secured, HS2 must be built in a way that maximises jobs and apprenticeships and delivers real benefits to passengers, communities and the environment.’

1000 new jobs in energy sector

It is likely that these jobs will be contract jobs related to the longevity of the projects.

Post office to hire thousands of Christmas temps

The Post Office has announced that it will be hiring 18,000 extra temporary staff this Christmas. Last year they ended up hiring over 20,000 temps to cater for the extra Christmas workload and then the additional workload caused by the snowfalls. It is great temp work in a time of need in the UK.

Public sector interims (temps) reduce their rates

The majority of interim public sector managers have reduced their daily rates as a result of less requirement for them. Gatenby Sandrerson (the Interim recruiter) suggested in a recent report that they may have reduced their rates by as much as 30%. Apparently average day rates sit between £500 and £800 a day.

NHS locums not a good thing

Employment of locums in the NHS will have a negative effect on patient care according to niche job board BritishMedicalJobs MD, Andre Shelton.

There has been a 55% increase in demand for locum vacancies due to the withdrawal of key services from the NHS. The problem is that a health service that is overstretched will almost certainly suffer if it needs to rely on a greater percentage of locum staff. Temps have their place in the workforce but it would be unfair to apply so much pressure to an unstable solution.
