1000 new jobs in energy sector

The Department of Energy and Climate Change is to announce that it will give agreement to two large energy generation projects. Sources suggest that further details will be given tomorrow - how these jobs will come to market is not yet known. It is likely that these jobs will be contract jobs related to the longevity of the projects.

BP will need contractors

Four new projects with energy company BP, will support 3,000 jobs. The projects will create and sustain jobs over a number of years, from the initial construction and design roles, right through to those decommissioning projects several decades in the future.

Will the Agency Workers Regulations reduce temp workers?

It is thought that some 500,000 temporary employment contracts could be terminated due to the Agency Worker Regulations (AWR) coming into force in October.

Work by Allen & Overy reveals that 33% of medium to large UK businesses might avoid increased costs by terminating agency worker contracts before the 1st October when the 12-week qualifying period for equal pay and benefits starts.

Skills shortage in the Oil and Gas sectors

The oil & gas industry faces a technical skills shortage due to the increasingly specialist technical work required across the globe. Jobs in the industry require complex skills sets and so the development of staff in these industries is paramount.
Staff are often contracted all over the world for specific projects and so the demand of the best workforce is high!

700 Humberside jobs created

Business Secretary Vince Cable has today toured Alexandra Dock where Siemens plans to build an £80 million wind turbine factory which will create 700 jobs, expected to be operational by 2014.

Under the development plan Associated British Ports (ABP) will build a £100 million deepwater berth capable of handling the new generation of large offshore wind developments.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said:

“The transition to a green economy presents significant growth opportunities both in the UK and abroad. The UK has the sixth largest low carbon economic goods and services market in the world.

“The offshore wind sector has the potential to create 70,000 jobs in the UK. We are committed to making sure that UK businesses get a headstart and seize those opportunities now.”
