Tata Steel to cut jobs in the north

The effects of the recession and changing times are still effecting the job market in the North East. Tata Steel apparently plans to cut some 1,500 jobs at its Scunthorpe plant and Teesside sites after continued losses for the last two years. Tata’s England based business produces bars, rods and rails for the construction sector.

Temporary workers on the rise

The use of temporary staff and temporary employees rose more than 10% in March this year compared to the same figures produced in 2010. Some sectors showed an even greater year on year increase in temporary workers. The temporary workforce in construction rose an incredible 47%. The much discussed high street as an indicator to the economy saw a rise of 12%. This is all great news for the temporary job market.

Birmingham gets massive jobs boost!

Birmingham New Street stations redevelopment, due for completion in 2015, is thought to be bringing in thousands on jobs over the next 4 years. 10,000 jobs (temporary, part time and permanent) will be created generating over £2 billion for the local economy.

John Lewis alone has announced a new colossal store that will create in the region of 650 jobs in what will be its biggest store outside of London.

Where are all the construction jobs?

According to the latest market intelligence from the CITB - Construction Skills, the East and South-East will be in need of the most new construction staff over the next five years. Jobs in construction in these areas of the UK are expected to rise ahead of other regions meaning that employment in the areas is on the up. Construction is so often seen as a great barometer of the economy.

Hull to see jobs boom

The city of Hull could be set for a major jobs boom after development plans have been agreed for a major offshore wind turbine manufacturing plant to be built off the city. The plant will bring up to 10,000 jobs to the city.

Engineering conglomerate Siemens and port operator Associated British Ports (ABP) agreed to develop plans for the facility at Alexandra Dock. No date is given for when this project will be started once it gets the final go ahead.
