Will the Agency Workers Regulations reduce temp workers?

It is thought that some 500,000 temporary employment contracts could be terminated due to the Agency Worker Regulations (AWR) coming into force in October.

Work by Allen & Overy reveals that 33% of medium to large UK businesses might avoid increased costs by terminating agency worker contracts before the 1st October when the 12-week qualifying period for equal pay and benefits starts.

West Midlands NHS announces jobs

NHS West Midlands health authority is creating 467 new front line jobs despite other jobs across the region being cut as the authority faces austerity measures. Our top advertiser - Synergy Group eyes up a positive 2009

Synergy Group remains positive in 2009 due to the range of opportunities expected in the public sector next year.

David Pyle, quoted on the Recruiter website, a spokesman for Synergy Group, says that the company still expects to grow by 10% next year and by the same amount in 2010.

“We have seen a lot of growth in revenues and benefits and housing departments as a result of the economy”.

Procurement and international placements were highlighted, particularly in social work as there is a real shortage of fully vetted and qualified staff.

NHS installs new employment checks….

The NHS will introduce tough new employment checks for all staff from 1st April 2008.

Some six booklets will contain all the information you need to know in regard to what standards employers must meet to comply to both legislation and NHS policy. The six areas of pre-employment checking include verification of identity, right to work, registration and qualification, employment history and references, criminal records checks and occupational health checks.

It is estimated that respective HR depatments will find these new checks particularly tough (particularly on their time!) when it comes to the vast number of temporary staff and students that the NHS employs annually.
