Future Jobs Fund creates new jobs in Redcar and Cleveland

A Teesside tourism graduate is looking forward to the future after landing her dream role with help from a government jobs scheme.

Gemma Golding, from Ormesby, is now working as a management assistant with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council after the council and partner organisations successfully won funding from the Future Jobs Fund to create 145 new jobs in the area for unemployed young people.

Gemma (22) is one of the first people in the region to be helped by the government scheme, which is providing up to £1bn to create 100,000 employment opportunities across the country for young jobseekers aged 18 to 24.

New jobs in East Lancashire

An east Lancashire-based technology company is creating 150 jobs after a huge expansion of its premises.

Daisy Group, which already employs 280 people, is opening another building at the Lomeshaye Industrial Estate in Pendle in January.

The firm said it was looking for more customer services and sales staff to boost its workforce.

Daisy was floated on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) in June and has since taken over three companies.

The firm said it was now the fastest growing technology company in the UK and one of the biggest employers in the area.

Transition to a greener economy must create opportunities for everyone

Responding to the Government’s announcement at the TUC’s Beyond Crisis conference the creation and first meeting of the new Forum for a Just Transition, a body set up to ensure that the opportunities and challenges of moving to a low carbon economy are shared equally around the UK, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

‘This is excellent news. By working together on how we create a low carbon economy, we can both create millions of new green jobs and build a better balanced economy less dependent on finance.

‘But the big changes we need will also cause pain. This is why planning the economic and social changes required for a just transition is as important as the technological and industrial issues.

‘The TUC is keen to work with Government, business and consumer groups through this forum to ensure that any transition to a greener economy creates opportunities for everyone in society.’
