Working in Europe open day in Midlands

People in Birmingham and the West Midlands will have a unique opportunity to find out more about working elsewhere in Europe when Jobcentre Plus hosts a European Jobs Day later this year.

Events will be taking place in every European country this year as part of the annual European Job Week. Britain’s event is being held on 28 October 2009 between 10.00 am and 3.00 pm at the Town Hall, Birmingham and will also mark the 15th Anniversary of EURES.

Jobcentre Plus is a member of the European Employment Services (EURES) network of public employment services, whose aim is to promote mobility in Europe, help employers to recruit from other countries and to provide information, advice, and guidance to jobseekers who wish to consider living and working abroad. It has over 700 specially trained advisers across 30 European countries to carry out this service.

Entry to the European Jobs Day is free. EURES advisers will be attending from France, Germany, Norway, Italy, Denmark, Czech Republic, Sweden, Great Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and will be on hand to speak to jobseekers and students who are interested in working abroad. Visitors will find lots of interesting information about opportunities in Europe and each adviser will be on hand to advise and answer questions about their own country. Jobseekers will also have the opportunity to visit our internet suite on the day to carry out job searches with the help of trained staff.

Also present will be representatives from Careers Europe, British Council, Jobcentre Plus, local training providers and voluntary organisations. In addition, there will be several overseas employers interested in recruiting from the UK and who will be interviewing potential new employees on the day.

Peter Sydserff, the EURES Manager for the UK, said: “The European Job Day will widen jobseekers’ appreciation of opportunities throughout a variety of European countries. The need to consider mobility is becoming increasingly more important when jobs are harder to find in the UK.”

Economy is still extremely fragile, says TUC

Commenting on growth figures released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) today (Friday) TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

‘This is now the longest recession in modern economic history. Even the co-ordinated world-wide stimulus has not been able to halt the damage done by the financial crash.

‘Even if we had achieved a technical recovery today, it would not feel like a recovery to the thousands losing their jobs or afraid that they will join the dole queue in the months ahead when unemployment will continue rising. It takes more than a statistical read out and the return of big bank bonuses for a real recovery.

‘These worse than expected figures should head off the growing signs of complacency. The economy is still extremely fragile. Any halt in economic stimulus - or even worse, cuts in spending in a premature effort to close the deficit - could easily send us into another downwards spiral.

‘Politicians cannot now say that the recession is over so we can go back to treating the unemployed as work-shy scroungers rather than victims of the financial crash. Fighting unemployment - particularly among the young - must be national priority number one.’

Raising state pension age to 70 would put older people in workless limbo, says TUC

Responding to the Institute of Directors’ (IOD) report on retirement published today (Monday), which calls for the state pension age to be raised to 70, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

‘The better off you are, the longer you live and the more years you get to claim a state pension. A big rise in the state pension age would mean the less well-off lose a much bigger proportion of their pension than longer-living affluent pensioners, who are much less dependent on the state pension in any case.

‘With employers fighting hard to keep a retirement age of 65, such a proposal would condemn many older people to a limbo where they are too old to work and too young for a state pension.

‘Taking from the poor to give to the rich is no way to reform the pensions system.

‘The IOD report fails to address the platinum-plated pensions enjoyed by FTSE 100 directors, which pay out nearly £250,000 a year and are commonly available at 60.’

Royal Mail to hire 30,000!!

The Royal mail will hire 30,000 temporary staff to help reduce the backlog of work created by the postal strikes in the coming months. The employment of these 30,000 temps will not be during the strikes but will solely be to help shift the mountains of mail expected to build up. It is thought that the recruitment campaign will cost an estimated £10 million.

Please design and build me a house. I am not quite sure of what I need, so you should use your discretion. My house should have somewhere between two and forty-five bedrooms. Just make sure the plans are such that the bedrooms can be easily added or deleted. When you bring the blueprints to me, I will make the final decision of what I want. Also, bring me the cost breakdown for each configuration so that I can arbitrarily pick one.

Keep in mind that the house I ultimately choose must cost less than the one I am currently living in. Make sure, however, that you correct all the deficiencies that exist in my current house (the floor of my kitchen vibrates when I walk across it, and the walls don’t have nearly enough insulation in them).

As you design, also keep in mind that I want to keep yearly maintenance costs as low as possible. This should mean the incorporation of extra-cost features like aluminum, vinyl, or composite siding. (If you choose not to specify aluminum, be prepared to explain your decision in detail.)

Please take care that modern design practices and the latest materials are used in construction of the house, as I want it to be a showplace for the most up-to-date ideas and methods. Be alerted, however, that kitchen should be designed to accommodate, among other things, my 1952 Gibson refrigerator.

To insure that you are building the correct house for our entire family, make certain that you contact each of our children, and also our in-laws. My mother-in-law will have very strong feelings about how the house should be designed, since she visits us at least once a year.

Make sure that you weigh all of these options carefully and come to the right decision. I, however, retain the right to overrule any choices that you make.

Please don’t bother me with small details right now. Your job is to develop the overall plans for the house: Get the big picture. At this time, for example, it is not appropriate to be choosing the color of the carpet. However, keep in mind that my wife likes blue.

Also, do not worry at this time about acquiring the resources to build the house itself. Your first priority is to develop detailed plans and specifications. Once I approve these plans, however, I would expect the house to be under roof within 48 hours.

While you are designing this house specifically for me, keep in mind that sooner or later I will have to sell it to someone else. It therefore should have appeal to a wide variety of potential buyers.

Please make sure before you finalize the plans that there is a consensus of the population in my area that they like the features this house has. I advise you to run up and look at my neighbor’s house that he constructed last year. We like it a great deal. It has many features that we would also like in our new home, particularly the 75-foot swimming pool. With careful engineering, I believe that you can design this into our new house without impacting the final cost.

Please prepare a complete set of blueprints. It is not necessary at this time to do the real design, since they will be used only for construction bids. Be advised, however, that you will be held accountable for any increase of construction costs as a result of later design changes.

You must be thrilled to be working on as an interesting project as this! To be able to use the latest techniques and materials and to be given such freedom in your designs is something that can’t happen very often.

Contact me as soon as possible with your complete ideas and plans.
