Fuel price rise affecting emergency services

Police forces are cutting recruitment because of the impact of rising fuel costs. With one force already reducing its recruitment level the Police Federation has warned more jobs may have to go.

Other emergency services are also feeling the pressure of soaring fuel bills and have warned they might have no choice but to cut services, get rid of staff or not buy expensive equipment.

In Hampshire, where the police run 1,000 vehicles, 80 fewer trainees will be taken on this year beacuse rising fuel prices have added £1 million to its bill. Derbyshire Police are also reportedly considering cutting recruitment to cover costs.
