Grants to create Welsh jobs

A new £19m business support programme announced yesterday could create around 1,000 new jobs over the next six years in the South West Wales area.

The South West Wales Flexible Business Finance Scheme is the first local-authority-let project to receive European Union funding totalling £8.9m.

Under the scheme almost 2,000 grants of up to £5,000 will be avaliable to help new and existing businesses grow and expad. The project covers Carmarthenshire, Swansea, Pembrokeshire and Neath Port Talbot, will support 1,400 existing companies and 400 new start ups.

Ireland’s largest insurer announces restructure that could threaten many jobs.

Ireland’s largest insurer, Hibernian, has announced a three year restructing plan that could see up to 580 jobs under threat. Hibernian said it is transferring some of its services to Bangalore in India to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Hibernian currently employs 2,200 staff and has said it intends to phase in the changes with a recruitment freeze, re-training, redeployment and normal staff turnover.
