NHS installs new employment checks….

The NHS will introduce tough new employment checks for all staff from 1st April 2008.

Some six booklets will contain all the information you need to know in regard to what standards employers must meet to comply to both legislation and NHS policy. The six areas of pre-employment checking include verification of identity, right to work, registration and qualification, employment history and references, criminal records checks and occupational health checks.

It is estimated that respective HR depatments will find these new checks particularly tough (particularly on their time!) when it comes to the vast number of temporary staff and students that the NHS employs annually.

Generation Y or the “Google” generation

Generation Yers are being referred to as the Google generation now - they want information quickly and expect answers straight away. Employers must understand the changes occuring in the employee market. New staff are much more demanding from their employers. They may be better skilled technically and therefore able to achieve new levels of efficiency but they also want greater empahasis on personal development and career guidance. They do not know how their careers should develop and expect businesses to map them out for them individually.

Northern Rock knees knock

According to the Telegraph Newspaper, upto 2,000 jobs could go at Northern Rock as the nationalised bank tries to return billions of pounds back to the Government, most of these jobs would potentially go in the North East.

Graduates recruitment competition

Graduates face a bleak summer of job hunting as companies cut back from their recruitment programmes due to the crisis in the financial markets, potentially creating a surge in people hunting for more flexible temp jobs.

c. 270,000 students will finish their degreess this year however they will actively be competing for only 75,000 graduate jobs, about 20% of the number of positions available 2 years ago. The will obviously mean the graduates will seek alternative employment in lower paid or temporary contract employment, potentially in bars and restaurants whilst biding their time. The problem will be exaggerated in the City of London where 10,000 job cuts are expected.

High levels of debt are obviously a major concern for students which student loans and course fees finding a job is paramount, people real can be walking a financial tightrope and run the risk of being declared bankrupt. Make sure you apply for a wide range of vacancies to ensure as many interviews as possible.

London bar jobs saved

The owner of the Tiger Tiger club chain has bought a number of London venues from the administrators of Soho Clubs & Bars in a deal which will save more than 300 jobs. Novus Leisure, which also runs the latenightlondon website, bought clubs including Jewel in Piccadilly, Cheers in Regent Street and Village in Soho after the collapse of Soho Clubs & Bars.

Three Soho Clubs & Bars venues remain with administrators Kroll - Candy Bar, Sirocco and Revue Bar. But the deal - reportedly worth upto £10 million - will see all 320 staff employed by Soho Clubs & Bars move over to Novus.
