Honda is apparently looking for new project and process engineers, they are required to work on new systems in the organisation. The new project and process engineers will be looking at the design, installation and purchasing of new equipment at a massive £24m logistics operation in Swindon which has recently opened. Because they are very specialist roles, it is proving very hard for Honda to find the right people.
The Car industry is flourishing in the UK and from a recruitment point of view it is looking very rosey……
There are now over 40 vehicle manufacturers who are now using this country as a production base, they range from the smallest to the largest empahasising the diversity of the UK market.
We have truely international automotive sector. There is no doubt that it is the arrival of the Japanese manufacturers that have given a much-needed boost as Nissan’s Sunderland plant, Toyota’s new base in Derbyshire and Honda’s Swindon factory have started to make a massive impression on the industry. Now, the UK has modern plants, good industrial relations and a workforce that can make cars cheaply, efficiently and well.
The sector has is currently doing very well and is producing a turnover close to £50bn in 2007 and employing over 800,000 workers.
Recently a councillor at Leicestershire County Council has been layed off for offering his workers a fully paid afternoon off to do their Christmas shopping.
The Cabinet member, Mr Kevin Feltham apparently claimed that the concept was ‘to prevent staff from skiving off’ to do Christmas shopping. His comments have apparently annoyed staff and caused upset.
The irony of this is that private firms have been giving people paid afternoons to do their christmas shopping for the last 5-10 years. Their staff have certainly not been upset, quite the opposite, they have been jumping at the chance.
TK Maxx has opened its first store in the East Midland’s town Corby, having opened its store over a week ahead of the official opening of Land Securities’ £40m Willow Place scheme.
