Hugo Boss & Cruise are set to open stores at Highcross, the shopping and leisure destination currently being developed in Leicester city centre.
Fashion seems to be a major foucs in Leicester so expect some very well dressed locals (and of course jobs at the following shops) thanks to Hobbs, All Saints, New Look, River Island, Zara, Reiss, Next, H&M, and Republic. For those of you concerned with trendy accessories you’ll be pleased to know that Apple are also opening a store in Leicester too, so techies out there can also apply for jobs at the new store in Leicester.
Set to open at the end of 2008, the current Shires shopping centre will merge with the new shopping centre to become a single destination of over 100 fashion retailers, three department stores – John Lewis, Debenhams, and House of Fraser. Ever head of the term ‘Tesco Towns’, probably not a phrase banded about openly but one which sums up the state of our current high streets and the dominance that the ‘big four’ are having over our shopping habits and experiences. To sum it up the convenience of shopping with everything under one roof and buying food in plastic containers processed beyond all recognition without fear of a parking ticket. Go to the high street and you run the risk of a dozen parking wardens leaping on your car the minute your ticket expires, but at least you get the chance to buy quality produce which more often than not is produced locally and therefore supports your local economy.
Well it looks like planning authorities are finally realising this too and the changes in law would suggest that the big four will be unable to seize a dominant position in a locally based market. To put this into perspective shoppers in Perth (Scotland) are now buying 60% of their groceries from Tesco! In their defence however the are not forcing people into their stores but its about time people realise there needs to be a balance in order to maintain a healthy economy.
It may be a a while away but at the end of next summer, a new ski centre is due to be opening in Manchester, next to the Traford Centre. It will be the biggest indoor ski slope in England. The developers are already marketing the venture and as such restaurant chains have been invited to show their interest in opening outlets.
The developers want to include an Italian/pizza restaurant, a noodle bar, an American-style diner, an ice cream parlour, a sandwich shop/deli, a chicken restaurant and a bar which wil all arranged on a Alpine-themed street. The concept sounds fantastic……
