Many of us are aware of the risk of identity theft but do you really know what you can do to help provide you being at risk?
Part of the pleasure of using the net and probably how you found this site, is ’surfing’ an interesting term in its own right but I won’t go into that now! There are several dodgy sites out there on the net, well several hundreds of thousands of dodgy sites…. You have to careful that innocent looking destination sites could have been set up with the sole reason to capturing your personal data. A good tool which I came across today on McAfee’s site is a good first line of defence, the program displays a red or green button at the bottom of the screen, letting you know if the site is considered safe by McAfee’s database.
Phishing is another term which is batted around when talking about security on the net, this is where an email perporting to be from you bank is sent to you, you’re then redirected to a site that looks like your bank’s site, you’re then asked to provide details to login, the simplist thing to do is make sure you don’t click on links but login via your usual method, i.e. via their website. Another method is to report suspect fraud emails to Bank Safe Online.
Identity theft isn’t really an appropriate term for the main search engines and the information that they monitor but you can block these too if you’re feeling a little paranoid. Got to Tor which can make your surfing untraceable to your computer, including blocking advertising which tracks your movement as part of its arsenal.
Facebook and MySpace are guilty of allowing users to view personal information which can lead to people being able to guess your passwords etc. This can include mothers maiden names, telephone numbers, date of birth to name but a few things. The easiest way to avoid people getting their hands on this sort of information is not allow random ‘friends’ to access you information, but don’t forget your limited profile is searchable via the net in the engines.
The last tip is to make sure that shred information, secure your wireless network and be careful where you enter your personal information…..
Please be assured that your information is safe on this site and we are not going to be passing your information to a third parties, your information is for you and you only. The site is registration free to browse and the minimal information is needed in order to creae your profile. Unfortunately certain information is needed if you are looking to post a job but again this information will not be used for marketing purposes.
Happy surfing……
