New rights introduced by the Part-time workers regulations 2000, ensured that part-time workers are not treated less favourably than comparable full-time workers in thier contractural terms and conditions.

This means part-timer workers are entitled to:

1. The same hourly rate of pay
2. The same access to company pension schemes
3. No less favourable treatment to acess to training
4. The same entitlement to contractural sick pay
5. The same entitlement to annual leave and maternity/parental leave on a pro-rata basis

Part time workers have the same rights and benefits - in proportion to the hours they work - as comparable full time staff, unless your employer can justify the difference on objective grounds.

The £920 milllon rebuilding of the Paradise Street area has been going on since 2004 and should be completed late next year. It is the largest scheme in Europe and will have over 1.6 million square feet of new shopping space.

The 42.5 acre site will contain over 30 individually designed buildings. The largest of these will be a 240,000 sq ft John Lewis department store, the chain’s largest in the North West. Also on the site there will be Debenhams, two hotels, a gallery, new bus station, new public park, cinema and 3,000 parking spaces. This will create over 4,400 jobs, many of them being temporary, shift based or part-time. It will bring a huge amount of employment to the area - all part of the generic development that is being seen across Liverpool.

St David’s shopping centre in Cardiff will undergo a modernisation and refurbishment which will include the building of St David’s 2 creating a stunning new retail destination covering around 1.4 million square feet, one of the largest in the UK.

This will provide John Lewis with its first presence in Wales, with a 260,000 square foot department store anchoring the Southern end of the new development. There will also be over 128 major stores in the development.

This development will create many new full-time, part-time and temporary jobs in the area. In 2009 over over 120 employers will be actively looking for in excess of 4000 employees to work in the St David’s Shopping Centre. As part of the recruitment drive for construction and retail positions which will commence in 2007 the partnership and Bovis Lend Lease will put in place the following initiatives:

1. A dedicated on site Job Shop
2. A travelling bus which will visit surrounding communities to highligh job oppertunities
3. Skills Training
4. Assistance in finding the correct prefessional qualifications
5. A skills matching database which employers can use to match job criteria

The search for 1000 construction positions has begun and a project dedicated job shop has been opened and is located at the main site on Barrack Lane. Along with helping people find work on the site, it will also provide information and advice on gaining construction skills training and how to obtain a CSCS card.

It would seem that Students are beginning to listen to advice from business leaders in the employment market. For sometime students have been advised to get as much work experience as possible for them to gain more knowledge of what they to actually want to do for a career. A survey earlier this year showed that 8/10 students understood that work experience was the key factor in getting the job that they wanted following graduation and money was not the major factor even though many students are leaving university debt ridden. So for those of you that aren’t using it effectively, the temporary job market is ready and waiting for graduates to take advantage and get the experience that businesses are looking for you to have gained.

The general concensus is that the automotive industry in the UK is not doing well and as such recruitment in this sector is not likely to be positive. Plant closures and negative press paints an ugly picture. This in fact couldn’t be further from the truth. The demand for skilled staff is high and recruitment is constant.
The current demand for Project Managers on both Permanent and Interim assignments is high with most manufacturers in the UK including Bentley, McLaren, Nissan, Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover recruiting. It is also evident that these businesses are recruiting at all levels from fresh graduate to those with extensive industry experience.
