Internet Use

It has been revealed by broadcaster watchdog Ofcom that pensioners are spending more time online than any other group of users. The report revealed that the over 50’s now account for 30% of all time spent online. It showed that those aged 65 and over spent an average of 42 hours per month on line compared to 37.9 hours among those aged 18-24 years old.

Figures reveal that the internet saw an increase of 158% in average daily use between 2002 and 2006. The increase in internet use is reflected in advertising spend; online advertising revenue increased by 47% from 2005 to 2006, to exceed £2bn. So clearly the place to advertise jobs and search for part-time and temp work is online.

Pub Jobs - Relief Managers

Pubs are expected to be open and operational 365 days a year and yet owners and managers need to take holiday and time off from the constant pressure. To cope with this occasional need, reliable relief managers are an essential part of the chaotic pub industry.
Moat of the large chains and operators manage a specific “relief circuit” of managers that are learning their trade or are full time “reliefers” so you will rarely find them looking for temporary pub cover. It is the independants, tenents or lessees were this temporary requirement is a fundamental part of the industry.

Periods of cover can range from a long weekend (typically a week though) through to a month. The norm is that a relief manager will pay a security bond of c.£1000 which is then paid back at the end of the relief period as long as there has been no hiccups.
Needless to say extensive experience is key and if you are using a relief agency then they will undoubtably ask for trade qualifications (National Licensee’s Certificate).

The typical temporary worker(s) in the relief market range from couples who are looking to keep working between pubs of their own, less experienced managers wanting a broader experience of the industry to semi-retired publicans who can not quite hang up their boots and what to keep busy in the industry that they have given their life to.

London Job Market

There seems to be a general level of concern following the recent fluctuations in the financial markets on what will happen in the employment market, specifically in London. Although these fears have their place, there is still a continued demand for staff across all sectors of employment and the demand for good people is outstripping supply. It is a good time to be bargaining with prospective employers. Flexiblility to allow staff better working hours, increased part time options and job sharing are on the up in an effort to retain the best employees and fend off the competition. You can rest assured that if one business will not consider it’s options then another will and flexibility to work with people who want part time work is ever increasing.

Hundreds of Jobs Created in Leicester Square

Developers have been given the go-ahead on a massive £250 million development to transform 2 acres of derelict buildings close to Leicester Square to relieve pressure on Covent Garden and create a new eating and shopping area.

The site will lie between London Acre and Upper St Martins Lane and Mercer Street. The development will include offices, restaurants and around 20 flats around a piazza four times the size of Neal Yards (around the corner).

This will create hundreds of London construction jobs in the short term and many long terms retail and catering jobs across the West End.

Snow mountain could create 2,000 Jobs

Have you heard about the new proposed snow mountain in Sheffield. An indoor snow hall is being planned as part of an £80 millon alpine style centre. This could lead to the creation of 2,000 jobs at the 30 acre site.

The plan would combine retail and leisure facilities at the existing Sheffield Ski Village. The plan includes a four star hotel, a cable car, a 300m long, 70m drop, colour coded runs, as part of a snow covered indoor winters sports centre.

This would be a superb facility and would create many part-time and temporary jobs.
