B&Q has implemented a new employment programme for aspiring Olympians. The programme will allow Olympians and Paralympians to work part-time hours but receive a full-time salary. The company has 13 such members of staff who will work on a flexible basis and receive all the benefits of full time employment. Allowing the B&Q team to work part time is a real step forward for the athletes who struggle in todays competitive world where the hardest element of training is balancing the hours with working hours. The interesting development from the implementation of this programme is the postitve impact that this is having on employee morale and engagement across the firm. As the number of employers looking to recruit increases, more and more are turning to the Internet to advertise jobs according to a new report from Jobcentre Plus.

The annual survey of over 4,500 employers indicates that over a quarter of British businesses (604,000) were on the look out to hire new staff last year. In 2006, 27% of businesses were actively recruiting new staff with 25% of all filled job vacancies advertised online. The proportion of overall vacancies now being advertised through the Internet has increased to 16% from 12% in 2004, with one in every eight employers surveyed confirming they had used Internet websites to advertise a vacancy in the last 12 months.

Recent reports on activity from the UK job market and changes in the Australian immigration laws have lead to record numbers of UK citizens leaving the UK for what they see as greater quality of life elsewhere. The type of individual that is leaving is the skilled worker who the UK economy relies so heavily on. This UK Brain drain is concerning economists as figures from the National Office of Statistics showed that more than 380,000 people emigrated in 2006 and approximately 200,000 were considered to be long term emigrants.
