Do we support temporary teachers?

Part time, Supply and Temporary Teachers are a source of knowledge that the UK doesn’t maximise and the problem is that that profession does not wholly support these individuals in the job market. The problem lies in that temporary teachers are often required to work over and above the standard hours that they are paid and therefore it is incredibly tough to be able to quantify just how many hours they are working and as such how much they should be paid for their work. They are without doubt a highly valuable commodity in the teaching profession but someone needs to stand up and support their cause. Teaching is not a 9-5 job and never will be……

CV - A thing of the past

With many recruiters moving towards what is known as an ‘e-portfolio’ is this the death of the CV as we know it. An e-portfolio contains factual information about a candidate’s suitability for a job, just as a CV does but also gives examples of work and places the emphasis on lifelong learning. It has the added benifet that it can be constantly updated and recruiters can also recieve updates when an alteration is made to an e-portfolio.

Many recruitment companies feel the main advantage of the e-portfolio is that it saves time and administration costs not only for the client but also for the candidate as well. What do you think, is this a good thing or do you prefer the tried and tested way of the CV? I think it could be very beneficial especially in the temp sector of the market where peoples experience and jobs are changing on a regular basis and if this way makes it easier to update and saves time, I feel it can only be a good thing.

What do you think?

Engineering Jobs

You chose your course, hopefully you made the right decision but what is open to you now as an engineer. You could decide to join an engineering company but a host of other opportunities are available to you, armed forces, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, all of which you can develop your career further.

As with most jobs, when you start you aren’t expected to hit the ground running straight away, you will get trained into the role you have been employed to fill. This could take the form of a structured programme, with varied experience or specialisation in one particular engineering field.

Depending on the experience you’ve gained, particulary in a specialised field you will be able to do contract work, this holds many advantages such as flexible working times, long holidays, and opportunity to gain vast experience across the globe!

Below is a short video for your amusement on what children would do if they qualified as engineers…. it’s not in English but hopefully you’ll get the idea!!!

Temping - Invaluable work experience

The purpose of Work Experience

Ultimately this will entirely depend upon whether you are still at school, at college, university or currently unemployed.

All work experience / temporary employment that you manage to attain as part of a course (or at any time) should, and in fact will, contribute to and complement the skills and knowledge you need for your qualification. The truth is that you should also consider temp work as part of a career planning programme, even if you may fundamentally work in a completely different employment sector or job later on. The commercial acumen and employment understanding will prove vital. It will make you stand head and shoulders above your peers when it comes to finding the job that you really want.

You will be picking up ideas, learning skills and gathering experience that will be useful to you in the future (even if your experience of temping is disappointing - the beauty of temping is that you can up sticks and try working in another part time job almost immediatley). You will also be able to add aspects of your experience to your CV and these in turn will assist applications for employment at a later date.
