Having worked in Media for some time I was greatly amused when I came across this video on
youtube. It speaks some truths and takes a tongue in cheek look at advertising agencies.
Have a look and let us know your thoughts, there are some minor offensive words but if you want to work in media I guess you’ll have to get used to it, enjoy the video!
So where and what should you do? Well at the moment the smart money is in New Media (Online Sales), sales people working in digital are commanding higher starting salaries, with the average salary starting at £19,600, compared to £18,400 in media agencies and £17,950 in media sales, nearly a clear £2k difference in starting salary. After 1-2 years experience you can look to typically earn upwards on £27k compared to £23k in straight media sales….. how long this difference in the market place continues is an interesting question.
With these massive differences in salaries (start looking at the salary difference after 5 yrs) can the market sustain two completely different growth curves of income where two people are planning the same campaigns, for the same client and most probably whilst sitting on the same desk!
In short, you should get in now and get in quick, experience and supply of people wanting to work in online is going to become saturated eventually, looking at the market in a macro economic overview simply supply and demand dictates…. For good jobs working in online I would suggest looking at the New Media Age website.
