The Benefits of Part Time Work

There are many benefits to working part time or as a temp, not only can it provide you with extra money whilst studying whether it be whilst still at school or universtiy but it will also provide you with work experince to put on you CV and give you an idea of what carer path you may want to take in the future. It will also allow you to develop your skills that many future employers require such as time management, organisation and decision making. One thing you do need to do though is make sure you get the balance right between work and study and not commit to more hours than you can cope with and let your studies be affected.

Part time or temp work can also be a great advantage to those people who have just finished there studies or for those people who are in between full time jobs as it will give you the flexibilty to earn money and go for job interviews. It may also be that during this time you take a part time or temp job in a line of work you would never have thought about before and end up finding your dream career.

Online Recruitment continues to rise

The use of Online recruitment as the main source of applications for job opportunities is continuing to rise according to a new report from Jobcentre Plus.

Apparently 25% of all vacancies and opportunities, whether they be temporary or permanent are now filled by advertising online. In fact, the figures equate to 1 in 8 employers using the internet successfully to hire staff in the last 12 months.

There is a reason for this, more and more jobseekers are using the internet – a record 6.6 million users used the jobcentreplus site recently.

Caroline Flint, Minister of State for Employment and Welfare Reform, said:
“Employment in the UK continues to show sustained growth. However, if we are to meet our aim of achieving 80% employment we need to work harder still to support more people back into work. Yesterday we published our Green Paper In Work, Better Off which sets out the steps to achieving full employment. That included our commitment to new Local Employment Partnerships through which major employers across all key sectors have pledged to create 250,000 jobs to support some of the hardest to help into work.”

Office gossip….it’s good to talk!!

It’s all about networking
I read recently that Diet Coke commissioned a study looking at the effect of office politics and gossiping in the work place. It was girls that lead the way in terms of the quality and amount of gossip but apparently “Office Gossip” is now a skill that workers of all kinds - both permanent and temporary, need to start to deploy. Internal networking and working your way to bigger and better things in your job can quite simply be achieved by knowing what to say to who and when. It would seem that lunch breaks and cigarette breaks can all be used as “strategic networking” moments where bonding with colleagues and powerful alliances can be formed.
These moments have proven crucial for temporary workers when they are trying to be offered full time work, extend their contracts and gain greater experience in the temporary job market…..so BT was always right……it is good to talk!!

Want to get promoted, are you sure?

Start by doing a good job, but just because you’re doing a good part time or full time job well, do you really want a promotion?

The increased pay might not make up for the increased workload. If you’re still interested in climbing the ladder, act now: A promotion is easier to get when there’s a job vacancy, but you need to state your case before the spot opens up.

Make sure you have glowing performance reviews, obviously, preferably in writing. Make sure you know the current market value of your position and where possible try to get recruitment consultants to back this up, again preferably in writing!

It’s also important to understand that promotions are usually decided by someone two steps up the ladder than you: You’re giving your immediate boss the necessary ammunition to convince their boss, so be prepared to articulate your assets and address your skills, whatever you do, don’t simply slag another employee off, it won’t work! Believe me I’ve conducted hundreds of interviews for internal promotion. Base your case on your future value, not on what you’ve already done, and be clear that you want new responsibilities.

Virtual recruitment, the future of interviews?

A virtual job interview, could it work especially with part time jobs?

Increasingly I get asked the question as to the merits of a virtual interview, with the onset of skype and webcams this could be a real possiblity whilst keeping costs to a bare minimum. When I finished University in Aberdeen I looked into various jobs in London however the costs involved with going down for a day included £200 worth of travel a stay in a London hotel (c.£100) and then the inevitable lunch and dinner at c.£25, guess what I didn’t go!! Luckily for me as I would probably not have had the opportunities I’ve had to date….

Is turning to the ever increasingly popular Second Life to reach your target audience the right strategy or a you really reaching a very limited audience of people with a little bit too much time on their hands? Apparently in Vancouver the city’s Police Department are runing a recruitment center in Second Life, staffed by officers in custom VPD uniforms, complete with badge, belt and radio creating avatars to helping the design online uniforms and gift bags for SL visitors (which will include a t-shirt, mug, and virtual donut).

Personally this seems a little whacky to me but focusing on communities and people sharing similar interests obviously has its merits. We’re looking to recruit here for a trafficker yet I loath to pay gumtree to post a recruitment ads when so many like minded communities exist…. everything has a price!

Take a look at this video from the RAF, its a little querky and basic but gets the message across and cuts out time wasters.
