Temporary workers are happier and more healthy than permanent workers, according to new research from the Department of Management at King’s College London.

The survey of 5,000 workers across seven European countries, including 642 from the UK, reveals that temp staff are happier than their permanent colleagues across a host of factors.

For example, 31% of permanent staff agreed with the statement “work causes anxiety”, compared with 16% of temp workers, while 21% of permanent staff agreed that “work makes me feel depressed”, compared to 11% of temps.

On the issue of workplace health, 68% of permanent staff said they had been off sick in the past year, compared to 60% of temp staff, while 81% of permanent workers have attended work while sick in the past 12 months, compared to 68% of temps.

Professor David Guest, the director of the UK research, said: “Two key factors need to be considered. The first is that permanent workers are more likely to feel that their psychological contract with their employer has been in some way violated and this affects their well-being.

“Second, it is not so much that temporary jobs are good but that permanent jobs have got worse. People are working harder, they have less freedom at work and there is a general decline in job satisfaction.

“The research findings suggest that we need to give urgent attention to improving the quality of all jobs, including those of permanent workers,” he added.

The seven countries participating in the study were Belgium, Germany, Israel, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

Working overseas, check your tax as you could be eligable for tax relief.

sydneyIf you live in the UK permanently you’ll pay tax on overseas income. If you live here temporarily, you’ll normally pay tax only on overseas income you bring into the UK. If there’s a ‘double taxation agreement’ between the UK and country in which income originates you won’t have to pay tax twice.

Business Banking

About three weeks ago I contacted my bank to arrange setting up a business account. They advised me I would need to complete the application form and come into the branch and have a meeting with the business manager to go through this to set up the account. This itself was quite a simple painless process and during the meeting we went through what I would require with the account, i.e. cash card, cheque book, internet banking etc.

About two weeks later I recieved confirmation that it was all set up and over the following days the cheque book, cash card etc arrived in the post. It was at this point I went on line to check the account, only to find I could not access the account as i did not have a customer number. Following a phone call to the bank I was told to get internet access I would need to print of a another form, complete this and then send it off. Why do you need to complete another form surely if you you have completed an application form to open an account they should then just give you access to online banking especially in this day age where everything is now done over the internet or surely as you are applying for internet banking why cant you just complete a form online and get immediate access?

Ebay gone mad, would you auction your own time?

The concept is simple in theory but does it work in practice, you can now use your spare time to make extra money in time slots which you can meet.

People with available time can run an online diary of the hrs each particular day they are available to work. E.g: “It’s now 6.00 pm, I want to work between 7.00 and 9.00 this evening.” You can also define the types of bookings / work they are prepared to do, how far they can travel and what hourly rate they are prepared to work for.

If you are an employer and you need to cope with a rush, clear a backlog or simply get people in on a flexible basis, then in theory local people wanting to do this work will be there to help.

Do you think this sort of flexbility is something that you would look to do if you had 2 spare hrs a night or would you employ someone on such an adhoc basis, please let us know your thoughts…

Is a fine fair….

Today I received my first parking fine, needless to say I was a little shocked to discover that the current going rate is £50, unless I pay this within 4 weeks it becomes a £100 fine. Considering I incurred this fine when my ticket had expired by 4 minutes whilst on a scooter, a mode of transport commonly used by part time workers, my mind starting thinking about whether this was fair or not!

With minimum pay at £5.25/hr doing a whole day shift (9hrs) to pay a fine seems disproportional, does 4 minutes late really equate to being punished to the tune of a whole days salary, or £12.50 per minute? How can this be addressed, could fines by based on your income, if you had a basic salary of £60,000 a year would you feel cheated paying £250 for being 4 minutes late or £62.50 a minute? Perhaps it could be based on tax bands, with 40% being the full fine amount of £50 and then proportionally weighted down so if you are on 22% then perhaps this could be tiered to £30, who knows…… but the system seems to punish part time workers and those on low pay. Feel free to post your opinion to us especially if you have had similar experiences and could give advice to other temps….
